THE CLIENT
Kahuka Flip Flops Ltd.

Kahuka are a start-up who wanted to create and design a collection of Hawaiian themed flip-flops using memory foam soles and eco-friendly recyclable materials.

I was asked to come up with a brand that encompassed the fresh, modern and relaxed vibe of Hawaii and to create something entirely different to similar products on the market.

The product design needed to allow for five different colour-schemes; each design needed to be unique and yet still clearly belong to a collection. The Kahuka icon had to be able to stand alone independently to the logo.

Lastly, packaging and printed marketing material were a part of the design brief which had to encompass the laid back look and feel of the brand.

LOGO DESIGN

For this project the brief was to come up with an original logo for a Hawaiin themed flip flop brand that could be used across all mediums from digital, packaging to the flip flops themselves.  It needed to stand out amongst competitors on often crowded shelves, while getting across to potential customers that this is a premium brand. Once I had gone through the brief and discovered that it was important for Kahuka that the logo look laid back but still premium, we then went through their logo moodboard together.

Here we could see that they really liked the idea of a palm tree being incorporated as well as sunsets and a few other Hawaiian themed icons. I tried to incorporate this through the use of circles in all of the concepts as a simple reference to the sun. The font was equally important to pick something unique but that had a laid back vibe to it while still looking high quality.

One concept in particular stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms of what they were looking for. This was then further refined by simplifying the logo mark even more, customising the font to improve legibility and creating a colour palette to supplement it. Multiple versions were then provided allowing the logo to be used across all mediums including the all important flip flops.

PRODUCT DESIGN

Once the logo and branding was complete I then worked with the team at Kahuka to help design their new flip flops. They had chosen a fabric upper with an eco friendly sole that was in keeping with their ethos.

I then researched colour schemes that were popular among the target market by looking at current and past best selling other flip flop brands. Additionally using colour theory to help make the decisions we came up with five main colours for the upper soles. We went for a baby blue, pink, beige, red and a classic black all of which were in keeping with the perception of the brand we had created.

Following this I then paired the main colours with complimentary colours for the strap and contrasting colours for the details and stitching on the upper sole. All the colour schemes were prepared ready for print and sent to the manufacturers.

To finish off this project I was asked to design some of the printed materials to go with the flip flops. I started with designing the hanger that would be in all the point of sale areas for Kahuka.

Working with a new medium allowed me to be creative with choosing the materials. I decided on a recycled cardboard for the hanger to make sure it was aligned with the brand values. I then sourced illustrations that complimented the logo and then the shape of the wave finished of the look that they were very happy with.

This look and feel was continued on all their printed materials where possible giving consistency and again really being an extension of the brand wherever possible.
